Some
organizations have government grants, elaborate fund raising programs, or other
significant funding sources. We are different. We have an opposite view of the
“money is the answer mentality.” We believe that some money is needed, but it
can become a vice (to rely on money to solve the world’s problems). This is
what we experienced while we lived in Haiti for nearly three years. Every kind
of humanitarian organization imaginable exists in Haiti… throwing money at all
kinds of problems. But money is just a band-aid if there isn’t real change in
the hearts and minds of the people of Haiti. It is the same for any country.
Real change for the good of a nation comes from change in the hearts of the
people of that nation. When we find people in a country who have a heart to
care for their own, we get involved. That’s where you come in.
We send teams and individuals to projects overseas. Our goal is to be a support
to programs and projects that are indigenous and relevant in the host country.
We serve and encourage, rather than perpetuate a superiority mentality from the
west. Sustainability is the key, and in most circumstances, this happens in the
realm of faith-based groups. We are believers in Christ, and often that is the
context within which we serve overseas. If you can accept this, we promise not
to hit you with our Bibles, but we won’t apologize for our faith either.
We would love to talk to you personally about how you can make Mercy
League your own, and change lives.
